Dirty Little Secret
Pornography.
XXXchurch founder Craig Gross calls it the “dirty little secret” of the church.
Another appropriate idiom would be “elephant in the room.” Most of us know porn is an issue, but none of us want to talk about it.
Consider some of the following statistics[1]:
- 37% of churchgoers say their pastors never talk about sexual issues.
- The porn industry generates over $57 billion in revenue annually.
- Child pornography alones over $3 billion.
- There are over 4 million porn websites.
- The average age of Internet exposure to pornography is 11-years-old.
- The largest consumers of Internet pornography are students between 12 and 17-years-old.
- 20% of men admit to accessing porn at work.
- 13% of women admit to accessing porn at work.
- 1 out of 3 visitors to adult websites are women.
- 40 million
- 53% of Promise Keeper men viewed porn last week.
- 50% of ministers have viewed porn in the last year.
- Porn is a leading factor in spousal abuse, rape, and divorce.
Pornography is not simply an adult male problem. It affects pre-teens, teens, women, young adults, senior adults, many of whom are Christians. We believe it’s time for the Church to acknowledge the elephant and contribute a voice to the matter.
